Zero waste?
What annoys me big time is our council's lack of enterprise when it comes to recycling. Sure, we have weekly collections of paper, tins, aluminium and glass - but that's it! What about plastics? The problem starts with packaging of food stuff. If the council cannot collect different plastics then surely our government should impose a plastics tax on supermarkets who warp their food in all sort of layers of varying plastics. With the shortage of oil, plastic wrapping is rapidly becoming a luxury that we can well do without. Get back to paper bags (recycled ones that is) and offer more loose product. I am sure that with a bit of education in the supermarkets and some incentives, most people will be able to shop without whining on about the loss of their plastic bags and plastic wrappings. Independent retailers are capable of offering bio degradable packaging hence supermarkets should be able to follow suit. Then there are glass jars, glass bottles et al. It takes a lot of energy (aka oil) to produce one jar and most commercial glass ends up in landfill sites (80% from what I read last). That is appalling! Try and reuse your glass jars and try and buy only clear glass jars and glass bottles. They are easier to recycle and much more coveted by recycling centres - because they are easier to melt down and make new glass jars from. And don't feel guilty about buying your cosmetics in PET jars (most come with aluminium lids). Just make sure the cosmetics jars are made from clear PET and bring them to your recycling centre - they are sought after and easy to melt down to make new stuff from. Of course it would be great if we could all be "zero waste" but any life form leaves some kind of footprint behind. It's just that ours is huge and rather destructive. Make an effort - start shopping with a conscience. Shop for tomorrow, not just today. |
